Lizard larceny: Seven geckos stolen from Limestone home

Limestone County authorities are investigating the theft of seven pet geckos Friday from a home on Airfield Street.

Deputy Stephen Young, public information officers for the Sheriff’s Office, confirmed the geckos were taken from their home and that no ransom note was found at the scene. As of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been made in the cold-blooded crime.

Young had this message for whomever took the lizards: “Switching to geckos will not save you money on your bail bond.”

The owner valued the seven geckos at a total of $3,600. Geckos sell for anywhere from $10 for the House Gecko to $370 for the New Caledonian Giant Gecko, according to the website www.BackwaterReptiles.com, which also charges $40 for shipping. Prices may be higher elsewhere or for species not listed on the website.
