Athens, ABS eliminated from regional

After keeping their seasons alive with victories Thursday night, both Athens High and Athens Bible couldn’t keep it going Friday morning, as both teams were eliminated from their respective North Regional tournaments.

Athens High kept it close with Hazel Green for four innings before the Trojans poured it on for an 11-0 win in the Class 6A regional while Athens Bible fell to Covenant Christian 18-4 in the 1A regional.

Both teams had stayed alive with wins Thursday night, with Athens defeating Alberville 4-0 and Athens Bible coming back to beat Gaylesville 10-9.

Friday wasn’t nearly as positive for the two schools. Athens faced an uphill battle against a Hazel Green team that had already defeated the Golden Eagles twice in the regular season, but Athens kept it close and trailed just 1-0 through four innings. However, Hazel Green scored four runs in the fifth inning and added six more in the sixth to pull away.

Athens did not have a hit in the game, and had just three base runners. Jada Gilbert and Olivia Patton drew walks while Kadence Miller reached on an error.

Athens Bible didn’t have much better luck, as Covenant Christian scored six runs in the top of the first inning to set the tone. They then scored four runs each in the second, third and fifth innings.

Athens Bible scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the fifth. Aubree Todd had a two-run triple that scored Sarah Woodard and Leighton Barksdale, who had singled earlier in the inning. Todd then scored on a groundout by Cana Vining, while Ragan Hamm also singled and scored in the inning.

Athens 4, Albertville 0

Athens scored all four of its runs in the sixth inning to break open a scoreless game and take a victory late Thursday night.

Anna Carder hit a two-run double while Emma Ogden followed with a double of her own, before scoring on a single by Maddie Wilson.

Wilson and Brenin Ezell combined on the shutout for Athens. Gracie Green had three hits to lead Athens, while Olivia Patton and Anna Carder had two hits each.

Athens Bible 10, Gaylesville 9

Athens Bible scored four runs in the seventh inning to stun Gaylesville Thursday night. The Trojans trailed 9-6 entering the final frame, but a walk by Hamm followed by singles by Rebecca Smith and Audra Stanford got the inning going, and two Gaylesville errors brought the runs home.

Bailey Davis and Woodard both had two hits for the Trojans, while Vining hit a double.
