Free fishing lessons offered by Wheeler refuge for 70th birthday

If you’ve dreamed of landing a lunker but never learned how, you’ll have your chance Saturday.

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Association will hold a fishing class at 8 a.m. at the refuge visitor center off Alabama 67 South.

Would-be fishers of all ages are welcome.

As part of the yearlong celebration leading up to the 70th anniversary of Wheeler refuge and in celebration of National Fishing and Boating Week, the refuge association is sponsoring a Fishing 101 program for anyone interested in learning how to fish.

Participants will learn the types of fish swimming in the area, what they eat and how to lure them.

Ranger Kevin Hamrick will present the program and show fishers the types of tackle to use and how to make the perfect cast. Afterward, participants can practice what they have learned at the special-event catfish pond.

National Fishing and Boating Week is an annual celebration – held the first week in June – to recognize the importance of fishing and boating. It is coordinated by one of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s partners, the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation. For more information on where to enjoy National Fishing and Boating Week, go to www.takemefishing.org.

Wheeler refuge and the refuge association will offer various wildlife, environmental and outdoor activities leading up to its September 2008 70th anniversary celebration. All activities are free and open to the public.

For more information, call the visitor center at (256) 350-6639 or visit the Wheeler refuge Web site at www.fws.gov/wheeler or the refuge association Web site at www.friendsofwheelerrefuge.org.
