• Chicken and goat stew. First Union Baptist Church is holding a chicken and goat stew on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Village Mart on Alabama 99. Stew will be available for purchase at 11:30 a.m. by the gallon, half-gallon and quart. To order in advance, call 256-777-2066. The Jan. 21 event has been canceled based on predicted rainy weather.

• Fundraiser. Nebo Community Church, at 17772 Nuclear Plant Road, Athens, is holding a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 29. A potluck lunch will follow the 10 a.m. service. Singing with Lauren Haggenmaker and Family and the Servants begins at 2 p.m. The public is invited. More information: Nancy 256-777-1095.

• Dinner and singing. Holt Road Baptist Church will host its fifth Sunday dinner and singing on Sunday, Jan. 29. Morning worship at 11, dinner at noon and singing, featuring the Heritage Singers, at 1 p.m. The public is invited. More information: 256-232-6160.

• Celebration of Thanksgiving. The Alabama Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America will hold a Celebration of Thanksgiving at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at the church location on Alabama 127 in Athens. The celebration includes worship and the honoring of founders, former church officials and former members. Special music by soprano soloist Arthurine Shackelford.
