County told it could get better tax collection rate
Limestone County commissioners were told Monday they made a mistake in voting to allow the state to collect the county’s sales taxes.
Pete Yonce, who represents AlaTax, the firm that has collected the sales tax the past seven years, asked commissioners to reconsider.
“We think we can save you $42,000 per year by staying with us,” Yonce said. “We realize you have gone with the state to collect your taxes, but I would like to go over the figures with you.”
Commissioners agreed to let Yonce estimate possible savings and to analyze those figures.
Commissioners voted earlier this month to allow the state to collect its taxes.
“We’ve been doing business with you for seven years and would like to continue that if you see fit,” Yonce said. “We believe the numbers that were produced that you based you decision on were incomplete.”
In other action, commissioners approved the development of a trailhead on the Limestone County Rails-to-Trails walking and biking trail.
Limestone County Engineer Richard Sanders said restrooms and a parking lot are being proposed on the north end of the trail at Veto.
The final phase of the project is being completed with the help of state funding.
The county has already accepted grants totaling more than $300,000 from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to complete the final phase of the project from Piney Chapel to Hays Mill.
The trail goes through Elkmont and ends at Veto.
Commissioners also gave final approval to The Ridge Subdivision in District 2 at Pepper Road, west of McCulley Mill Road.
In addition, a 25 mph speed limit was approved for Hillwood Lane, Hillwood Court, Sara Beth Lane and Alden Lane.
The Limestone County Courthouse and annexes will be closed for one hour July 3 to allow employees to attend a county luncheon.
Commissioners will adopt a resolution honoring Alabamians who have served or continue to serve in the armed forces in conjunction with Memorial Day May 28.
Commissioners approved the transfer of Mitchell Robertson to District 1 as equipment operator III and revised the staffing plan to update those changes; voted to employ James R. Rouse as a mechanic in District 4; and approved family medical leave for Billy Stovall from May 21 through Aug. 21.
