County commission commits funds for library
At a meeting Tuesday morning that was postponed from its regular date because of the Martin Luther King holiday, Limestone County Commissioners voted to commit more than $450,000 to create a new public library in the old Kroger building.
The county helped the City of Athens purchase the building on Jefferson Street, which has been abandoned since the grocery closed in 2004. The city council voted Friday to commit the same amount — $456,000 — to the project under the condition that the county ponied up its share and that the Library Foundation and its board allocate their shares.
A meeting was to be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the current library building on E. South Street to further discuss funding for the project.
