Library offers free access to genealogy, auto repair databases

Officials with the Athens-Limestone Public Library believe two new databases being offered free to patrons could be valuable tools for those interested in their history or anyone rebuilding a carburetor.

Library Director Paula Laurita said access to Ancestry.com’s library edition and Chilton Library were made possible through a statewide licensing agreement with the Alabama Public Library Service, of which the local library is a member.

The APLS makes the services possible with federal funds issued by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

“State acquisition of these databases represents thousands of dollars in savings for Alabama public libraries and immeasurable value for Alabama citizens,” Laurita said.

Even though there is a growing trend among Americans to find out more about their own genealogy, Laurita said the opportunity to offer the Ancestry.com library edition coincides with Alabama’s bicentennial. The state will turn 200 in 2019, but celebration efforts are already in the works statewide and locally.

The Chilton Library is a comprehensive auto repair database featuring detailed instructions on car repair. Laurita said users also have the ability to download a phone app so a diagram or instructions can be accessed via smartphone while a repair is underway.

“It’s a good tool to have, especially since we have a lot of people in the community who have an interest in older vehicles,” she said.

Ancestry.com

Unlike the Chilton Library database, the Ancestry.com database can only be accessed at the library. There are dedicated computers in the Shelby Southard History Room for genealogy research.

Users can research millions of records, including census data, military records, court documents, and immigration lists to find out more about their own family histories and how they became an Alabamian.

Users can access repair, maintenance, and service information on the most popular cars, trucks, vans, and SUVS on the road today. The database is continually updated and provides step-by-step repair procedures, troubleshooting guides, diagnostic trouble codes, photos, illustrations, diagrams, videos and animations.

The database also provides access to recalls and service bulletins, estimated labor time and ASE mechanic certification prep materials.
