UPDATE: 1 injured in Monday apartment fire

A fire Monday morning at Oakleaf Apartments on Elkton Street in Athens left one man unconscious and at least two units damaged.

Athens Fire & Rescue responded to the call about a fire in apartment D-23 at 9:29 a.m.

Fire Chief Bryan Thornton said firefighters David Kress and Brandon Wilson heard someone moan and felt the man on the floor in the kitchen.

Thornton said the man was taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. According to emergency radio traffic at the time, the man had also suffered facial burns and was transported by MedFlight to Huntsville Hospital.

Thornton declined to give the man’s name. An update on his condition was unavailable at press time Monday.

Because the fire resulted in an injury, the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified of the incident. Thornton said Athens Fire & Rescue would be working alongside the fire marshal to investigate the cause of the fire, which started in the kitchen.

Thornton said a second apartment, D-24, sustained water damage.
