Missing arson suspect captured and returned to jail

An Athens man accused in March of setting fire to his apartment after a fight with his girlfriend apparently fled while free on bond and is now back in jail, records show.

Daryl Dela Cruz Guillermo, 27, of 210 Cloverleaf Drive, Apt. 2, was formally charged in May with first-degree arson.

Guillermo is accused of setting a March 20, 2016, fire at 210 Cloverleaf Drive, Apt. 2. He was released from the Limestone County Jail on March 25. Ace Bonding Service posted a $10,000 bond securing his release.

The Limestone County grand jury indicted Guillermo on the felony charge May 12.

When Guillermo failed to show up for his Sept. 1 arraignment, Circuit Judge Jimmy Woodroof Jr. issued a bench warrant for his arrest and issued Ace a notice of conditional bond revocation on Sept. 23, which meant the company might forfeit the $10,000 bond to the court unless they could find and return Guillermo.

He was captured and returned to jail Sunday, records show.

The case

Athens police officers were called to Guillermo’s apartment about 1:40 p.m. to help Athens Fire Department investigate a suspicious fire, Police Chief Floyd Johnson said at the time.

When firefighters entered the apartment, they found a mattress in one of the bedrooms burning as well as items burning on the stove. Although the apartment had been locked, firefighters found several windows broken but no one home.

Tenants in other apartments in the same building were home when the fire broke out but none of them were injured.

Officer Brandon McCuiston recognized the apartment’s address from a domestic incident call earlier that day. Guillermo had told officers his girlfriend was refusing to let him get his property from the apartment.

He had told McCuiston he wanted to get his television, couch and other items.
