First historic walking tours deemed a success
About 14 people were part of Mooresville’s first historic walking tour held April 1, according to a press release.
The group gathered at the state’s oldest operating post office on Lauderdale Street before winding through tree-lined streets and taking in door-to-door history, heritage and architecture.
The group learned more about the historic homes and stood in the shadow of the Brick Church. Participants also heard tales of local lore, including the âXYZ Preacher,â visits from U.S. presidents and other past tales.
Mooresville’s small businesses â Lyla’s Little House, Java.Mooresville, Mooresville Mercantile, Hen House Arts and Southern Carnage â welcomed the tour groups and invited them back following the tours for a little shopping and dining.

The tour featured the following guides and locations: Rebekah Davis, Houston Historic District; Buzz Estes and William Pepper, Downtown Athens Historic District; Anna Gibbs, Athens College Historic District; and Billy Ward, Beaty Historic District.
The walks in both Athens and Mooresville will occur each Saturday for the remainder of the month. They are free and open to the public and take about two hours to complete.
