Baucom to enter race for mayor

The race for mayor in Athens will draw at least one other candidate on the final day to qualify.

Retired Athens businessman Charlie Baucom, 66, said Monday he plans to qualify today for mayor.

“My biggest pet-peeve is we don’t have enough police officers and firefighters in this city,” Baucom said. “We have a growing need for more officers and we need to pay them more for the job they do.”

Baucom will be the fourth candidate to enter the race.

Incumbent Mayor Dan Williams is seeking re-election to another four-year term. Two others, former Madison Mayor Chuck Yancura and Ralph Richardson qualified earlier.

Baucom is the retired owner of CBI Trucking on Mooresville Road. A native of Tanner, he has owned and operated the trucking warehouse since 1984. It now employs 60 people, he said.

Meanwhile, one other person qualified Monday for the Athens City Council.

Political newcomer James L. Putman qualified for Athens City Council District 2 now held by Harold Wales who has also qualified to seek re-election.

Milly Caudle is the only other council member with council opposition in the upcoming Aug. 26 city election. Charles Sample, 62, a TVA engineer who ran for City Council in 2004, qualified Thursday to challenge Caudle for the District 5 seat. Sample is a member of the city Personnel Board, serving his second term.

District 3 Councilman Jimmy Gill and District 4 Councilman Ronnie Marks are still running unopposed.
