Those seeking information about how to preserve historic gravestones and cemetery monuments are urged to attend an upcoming workshop.

The event will be hosted by the Alabama Historical Commission and the Friends of the General Joe Wheeler Foundation. It is set for 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at Pond Spring, the General Joe Wheeler Home in Hillsboro.

The workshop is being held in commemoration of February being Black History Month.

One topic will include gravestone cleaning, which will be demonstrated onsite. Because the event coincides with Black History Month, workshop leaders will also share history of the African-Americans, both enslaved and free, who worked on the property during the 19th and 20th century.

“We are very proud to be working with the AHC to celebrate and honor these individuals who played a significant role in our history,” said Dr. Angelo Mancuso, chair of the Friends of the General Joe Wheeler.
