NORTHWEST REGIONAL TOURNAMENT: West Limestone ousts Good Hope 44-23 with strong 2nd half
HANCEVILLE — Good Hope came ready to play during Saturday’s Northwest Regional Tournament.
West Limestone, however, came ready to finish.
The Lady Raiders played an admirable first half, but the Blue and White flexed their muscle over the final 16 minutes to come away with a 44-23 victory inside Tom Drake Coliseum.
I’m glad that we won the game,” said West Limestone coach Jordan Paul. “We started off shaky. Good Hope made it difficult for us. We missed a million shots in the first half, shots we usually make.”
Good Hope’s loss ended its season at 13-17.
“We couldn’t buy a basket,” said first-year coach Amanda Swann. “Everything rolled in or out. Things fell for them, especially during that second half. It was definitely a blessing to be here, though. These girls deserved it. We’ve got a lot of things to work on to get back here, and we’re going to do that.”
Neither group shot the ball well during the first half, but the Red and White defense did more than enough to keep West Limestone from finding any offensive rhythm.
Unfortunately, Swann’s team wasn’t able to capitalize and trailed 17-14 entering halftime.
It didn’t get any better from there.
The Lady Wildcats opened the third quarter on a 12-1 run before back-to-back buckets by Erika Woodall and Kate Kent helped stop the bleeding and trim the deficit down to 10 heading into the final frame.
In the end, though, the Lady Raiders simply couldn’t score.
“We kind of went on a run there in the third quarter,” said Paul. “In the first half, they attacked us. In the second half, we attacked them. That was the difference.”
Good Hope shot 12 percent (3 of 25) in the second half and just 19 percent (8 of 42) in the bout.
“We couldn’t get one to fall, could we?” Swann lamented.
Kent spearheaded Good Hope with 10 points, while Woodall (seven), Savanna Derrick (four) and Sadie Abbott (two) rounded out the scoring. Kent and Woodall each tallied six rebounds. The latter also amassed three assists and a pair of steals.
Destiny Clemmons (13 points), Rainey Tyler (12) and seventh-grader Caroline Bachus (eight points and 14 rebounds) all had superb outings for the Lady Wildcats, who are 19-8 and will take on No. 1 Deshler (33-0) in the championship tilt next Wednesday at 9 a.m.
