Athens native Lucas Lindsay was recently recognized as Angler of the Year for the Auburn University bass fishing team. He received the honor at the team’s Jan. 21 banquet.
Lindsay was born in Athens before moving to Auburn as a child, and said his first cast as a fisherman was made in a swimming pool at his house off Lindsay Lane at age 3.
While in eighth grade, he and his fishing partner, Logan Parks, founded the Auburn High School bass fishing team. As high school sophomores in 2015, Lindsay and Parks finished third in the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship on Kentucky Lake.
To earn the top spot on the Auburn fishing team, Lindsay, a sophomore, competed in five solo tournaments during the fall qualifiers. Those began with more than 70 competitors and would determine who would make the 12-person travel team. The total weight of five fish from each of the tournaments were weighed and tallied for first through 12th place.
Lindsay collected three first place solo finishes in the qualifiers on the university team and eight top five solo finishes. Last season, Lindsay and Logan traveled more than 10,000 miles as freshman anglers representing Auburn University and qualified to compete in all three national tournaments to include FLW, BASS and Cabela’s. They ended their freshman year ranked fourth in the nation of collegiate anglers, according to bassrankings.com.
They will begin a new season in a few weeks with a tournament at Lake Seminole on the Florida-Georgia border.
Lindsay is the son of to Lee and Michelle Lindsay and the grandson of Carolyn Webb Lindsay and the late Larry Lindsay of Athens.
