Four young people were injured Wednesday night in an accident involving fireworks, officials said.

According to a Facebook post from Denise Oliver, the four involved were her son C.J. Yarbrough, Malik Atkins, Zakobe Shoulders and Ashton Hines.

Yarbrough, an All-State basketball player who has committed to play football at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, recently transferred from Tanner High School to East Limestone High School for his senior season.

Shoulders is a recent Tanner graduate and has signed to play football at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois.

Atkins and Hines are students at Tanner and will be entering their junior seasons. Atkins starred on the basketball court for the Rattlers this past season, while Hines is a member of the football team.

All four of the victims were reported to be in stable condition at UAB Hospital Thursday.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said his department was notified about the incident at about 9:18 p.m. Wednesday. Athens officers were actively investigating a pedestrian fatality, which had occurred a short time earlier.

Athens Fire & Rescue Chief Bryan Thornton, who responded to the scene, said the teens’ vehicle traveled across a yard and hit two other parked vehicles. He explained it was initially called in as a car fire next to a house in the 2100 block of Stanford Street.

The four occupants sustained burn injuries, and the vehicle was a total loss. Johnson said the initial investigation indicated the accident is related to fireworks, but investigators had not been able to talk to everyone involved.

Like Johnson, Thornton had no information about the cause of the car fire or what role fireworks may have played.

Limestone County Coroner and EMS Director Mike West said one person was taken to UAB Hospital from the scene, while three others were taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital. The other three were eventually taken to UAB Hospital via ambulance a short time later.

The victims were taken to UAB because it is one of only two regional burn centers, with Vanderbilt being the other option.

Tanner principal Deborah Kenyon said in a statement at least three Rattlers coaches have traveled to Birmingham to visit the victims.

“We are all very concerned and want the students and families to know that their Tanner High School family is here to support them,” Kenyon said in the statement. “They are in our thoughts and prayers.”

The Athens Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.
