A flipped Penske moving truck blocking the intersection between West Washington Street and South Houston Street, near Tropic Tan, snarled traffic for several hours Monday, July 8.
“One vehicle was going east on Washington, while the other vehicle was going south on Houston,” Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell said. “Both of the drivers are saying that they had a greenlight.”
The crimson Volkswagen SUV struck the bright yellow Penske truck on its side, causing the large cargo truck to roll over. The front of the SUV was crushed.
“We have no independent witness that we can locate at this time to help clarify the situation,” Pressnell said. “Right now we are just going on the statements of the drivers.”
According to Pressnell, one of the drivers was taken to the Athens-Limestone Hospital for minor injuries.
The roadway was blocked for a few hours on Monday afternoon as city fire and rescue was called to help relieve the traffic issues.
City workers helped tip the Penske truck upright and moved the crimson SUV to a tow-truck to open up the intersection.
