Poke Sallet will run from Thursday, March 7, through Saturday, March 9, at the Athens Senior Center, 912 W. Pryor St.

Athens City Councilman Frank Travis is directing the production, which is now in its 27th year. When asked about the show’s title, he said the production is based on what some may consider stranger things.

“We delve into some of the strange folklore that surrounds Limestone County,” he said.

One skit is about the Rev. Constantine Blackmon Saunders, otherwise known as the X+Y=Z Preacher.

Often referred to as the Sleeping Preacher, Saunders was known to fall into a trance-like state in which he would describe events that happened far away and write word for word the content of letters yet to be delivered. During his spells, he would tell of the location of lost valuables, diagnose ailments and even prescribe treatments.

There’s another skit based on the myth of “Wild Thing,” the white yeti-like creature that stalked Limestone County. For fans of the paranormal, there’s even a ghost story.

“There’s a big meeting of the Athens Ghost Society at the Athens Cemetery,” Travis said, adding the ghosts are those most often talked about in Limestone lore. “The meeting only happens once per year at midnight on Halloween. It’s a ghoulish good time.”

Travis said the Poke Sallet writing team worked with Limestone County Archivist Rebekah Davis on the historical details. He added the show this year features about 90 cast members and support personnel. The cast includes regulars like Mayor Ronnie Marks, Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely and Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson.

“It’s a whole community effort, and we appreciate the support,” Travis said. “We’ll have some surprises as well.”

Poke Sallet serves as the local Foundation on Aging’s biggest annual fundraiser. The foundation provides a number of services, including Meals on Wheels.

Presale tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Athens Senior Center. Regular ticket sales begin Tuesday at the Council on Aging offices at 503 S. Jefferson St.
