City residents can show their support in kicking cancer to the curb by purchasing a pink garbage can.
The City of Athens Sanitation Department and Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation are selling pink garbage cans to raise awareness of breast cancer. The cans cost $75. Proceeds will fund the Pink Elephant Mammogram Scholarship Fund for Limestone County residents who need a mammogram but don’t have insurance or insurance won’t fund the procedure.
The 96-gallon, rolling trashcan works with the city’s automated garbage pickup truck and can be used just like the green garbage can residents already use. Once you order a pink garbage can, it will be delivered to your home.
County residents can purchase a pink garbage can but will have to pick up the can at the city’s Sanitation Department at 1600 W. Elm St. County residents cannot use the 96-gallon pink garbage can for garbage disposal because the county contracts its garbage pickup. For county residents, there is a limit of 32 gallons per can or bag and a weight not to exceed 40 pounds per can or bag.
County residents can find other uses for the pink can such as storage of Christmas decorations or to hold items for recycling.
