After 28,500 nominations and votes, officials with BallCorps LLC announced late Wednesday the name of Madison’s new minor league baseball team would be the Rocket City Trash Pandas.

The name beat out four others — ThunderSharks, Moon Possums, Space Chimps and Comet Jockeys — to take the top spot. The name was unveiled at an event at Rocket Republic Brewing Company in Madison.

The new team will open its season in Madison in 2020. Ground was broken on the team’s new stadium on June 9.

Team owner BallCorps LLC is relocating the Mobile Bay Bears after the 2019 season. It will represent the first minor league team in the Huntsville area since the Huntsville Stars moved to Biloxi, Mississippi, in 2014.

The Trash Pandas name was nominated by Matthew Higley of Laceys Spring. He will receive two box seats for the first five years of play in Madison and will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Trash Pandas home game in 2020, according to a press release.
