Superheroes have taken over High Cotton Arts in Downtown Athens.

Batman, Superman, a Super Mom and young student heroes comprise the exhibit that is on display for the month of September in honor of it being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Eli’s Block Party Childhood Cancer Foundation asked Athens Arts League to oversee a contest and exhibit in conjunction with its annual Superhero Day. Athens Arts League and Steelcase sponsored the Comic Book Art Contest and Exhibit and invited students and adults to submit entries in the comic book style.

“Seeing the artwork so many created for Childhood Cancer Awareness is inspiring,” said Athens Arts League President Amy Golden.

Athens State University’s art program provided a panel of judges to choose first, second and third place in various age categories.

The winners are:

• Best Overall: Alice Vincente and Veronica Valladores;

• Grades K-2: First place, Mary Anderson; second place, La’Bron Turner; and third place, Lizbeth Tintle;

• Grades 3-5: First place, Mitchell Olivias; second place, Layton Chambers; and third place, Ronald Ratricia;

• Grades 6-8: First place, Hannah Yang; second place, Trey Johnston; and third place, Lamar Fudge;

• High School: First place, Bailey Burkett; second place, Georgia Chandler; and third place, Aysa Taylor; and

• Adult: First place, Lynn Weatherford; second place, Sanda Bishop; and third place, Sanda Bishop.

The winners are on display in the window at High Cotton Arts while the other submissions are located in the Athens Rotary Student Studio at High Cotton.

The exhibit will remain on display all month.
