Keeping active has center bursting at the seams

Art class, dancing, parties, and sports competitions — these just a few of the activities that took place at the Athens Activity Center Wednesday. The center was bursting at the seams as seniors came out to flex their artistic skills, celebrate a Limestone County icon, and more.

More than 20 seniors attended a free watercolor class taught by local artist Sonya Gordon from High Cotton Arts. The class was the second in a series of art classes created to give seniors the opportunity to either discover their talent, show off their talent, or both. The classes are held quarterly and are sponsored by Snapdragon Kids.

The first class, held in March, was a huge success. The class was taught by artist Tina Swindell. This month seniors learned about and worked with watercolors. The class painted with many vibrant colors to create beautiful roosters with step-by-step guidance from Gordon. She was assisted by fellow local artists Karen Middleton and Martha Griggs.

Prior to the art class, the seniors of the Athens Activity Center surprised their Dancercise instructor, Kay Burlingame, with a fun birthday party. More than 50 partygoers put on their dancing shoes to celebrate with their “dancing queen.”

“I will tell you what Kay Burlingame is. Kay Burlingame is blessed,” she said of her friends coming out to wish her a happy birthday. “Dancercise and this center have been blessing to me. Without those two things, I would not have met so many of the amazing people I am good friends with today.”

Dancercise is held Mondays and Wednesday from 9:30-11 a.m.

The athletes at the center continued Friday to compete Friday at the 2024 Masters Games. Friday, events were held in shuffleboard, Nerf and frisbee toss, and billiards. Next week bowling and table tennis events with be held.
