A woman identified as Alexis Garth, 26 of Athens, was killed early Sunday morning, Jan. 1 according to Athens Police Department.

At 4:00 a.m. Sunday, APD officers responded to a domestic violence related shooting in the 22000 block of Oakdale Ridge Lane.

Officers located Alexis Garth in a driveway, provided aid, and called for an ambulance, APD said. She was taken to Huntsville Hospital. APD said she did not survive her injuries and died a few hours later.

Athens police detained Kyruan Yarbrough, 20 of Athens, at the scene. He has been charged with capital murder.

This is an ongoing investigation. APD said any updates will be provided on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
