Athens Intermediate School 5th grade students have been working hard studying concepts of engineering. When their science teachers expressed their wishes for a higher place to test parachutes the students have been designing, principal Jake Herrera found a way to make it happen.

“Within our study of ‘Gravity,’ students connect their study of astronomy to a broader understanding of spacecraft and parachute design. We attempt to introduce and reinforce science concepts about atmosphere, planets and drag while students explore different aspects of aerospace engineering. The culmination of our study is to design and launch student-made parachutes,” AIS teacher Stuart Duncan said.

This was the third design for the students after testing different materials. One student kept the time and all students recorded the information during the drop.
