Although producers initially reported a show on The Weather Channel featuring interviews with local people would air tonight, a Weather Channel spokeswoman said the program would debut at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
An episode of “When Weather Changed History” will focus on violent tornadoes that hit Limestone County in 1974, part of what became known as the Super Outbreak. It is set to air at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Central time Wednesday and will be repeated at 3 p.m. Thursday and at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday.
On April 3, 1974, 148 tornadoes struck in 13 states. Two storms that struck near Tanner were rated F4 and F5 on the Fujita scale, with F5 being the strongest on the scale at that time.
Among the witnesses to those storms who were interviewed for the show were Donnie and Felica Powers; Emergency Management Director Spencer Black, who was Civil Defense director in 1974; and Bill Dunnavant, who was a radio journalist at the time.
Along with interviews, the show will feature re-enactments of events of that day.
Producers Hugo Soskin and Nailah Sims were in town in August to interview the Powerses, who were teenagers at the time and who were married a few months after being seriously injured by the tornadoes.
Sims said the episode would illustrate how this series of tornadoes debunked some myths about paths tornadoes travel and how to prepare for tornadoes.
The production team also filmed segments in other cities hit by the 1974 storms, including Xenia, Ohio — the city hit hardest that day —Brandenburg, Ky., and Louisville, Ky., Sims said.
