Hotels Magazine, an industry publication, reported Wednesday that Wedge Hotels Corp. purchased the 88-room Hampton Inn and Suites, located off Interstate 65 at Exit 351.

Details of the transaction are not known, and efforts to reach Wedge Hotels Corp. for comment were unsuccessful Wednesday.

The group also purchased the 104-room Hilton Garden Inn in South Huntsville and two other Hilton Garden hotels, including one in Winston-Salem, N.C., and one in Odessa, Texas.

The Kana Hotel Group, which owned the two Alabama hotels and the North Carolina Hilton, will continue to manage the properties.

New hotel in Athens

Those traveling near Interstate 65 lately have likely seen the large concrete beams standing tall on the north side of U.S. 72.

Construction crews are working on a new 38,000-square-foot Fairfield Inn & Suites. The 75-room hotel is expected to employ 20 to 25 people.

There are currently 13 hotels and motels in the Athens city limits, according to the Athens-Limestone County Visitors Center website. In addition to the Holiday Inn Express, exit 351 is already home to Best Western, Country Hearth Inn, Days Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites, Key West, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn and Super 8.
