Student golfers rely on support from community

On Tuesday, May 11 the Athens High School boys golf team won second place in the state 5A tournament held at Robert Trent Jones course at Hampton Cove.

The eight boys on the team this year have achieved a level of success for which they should all be proud. During the season, each one of them posted tournament scores in the 70s and two of them had scores in the 60s. They won major tournaments in Scottsboro, Oxford, Athens (at home playing at Canebrake), Sectionals and Sub-state prior to their second place in the state championships.

Unlike most other high school sports, golf is a sport for which most schools do not have a facility. Because of this, golf teams rely upon community support.

Here at Athens we are lucky to have access to and support from the ownership, membership, and staff at Canebrake. Canebrake is not only one of the best golf courses in North Alabama but also a great residential community that entices many newcomers to the area to make their home in Athens.

As a parent of one of the high school golfers and a resident and member of Canebrake, I would like to thank the ownership partners Alston Noah, Carl Hunt, and Billy Christopher, General Manager Jack Sauers, Golf Professional Josh Gardner, and the rest of the Canebrake staff for their support of both the Athens High School boys (and girls) golf teams.

I would also like to thank all the community businesses and individuals who support the teams through their generous contributions. Without this community support and the leadership of coach Bowling the team could not have achieved its current level of success.
