The Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts is hosting a special event presenting “Alabama’s Women Cookbook Authors Betty Sims and Sister Schubert” at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 19.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Princess Theatre. It is also made possible by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The event, with renowned cookbook authors Betty Sims and Sister Schubert, includes a presentation about their culinary experiences, recipe demonstration, tasting, and take-home recipe sheets of their favorite recipes. The event also includes a book signing with these culinary stars of Alabama and their new cookbooks, “Southern Scrumptious Favorites” and “Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters.”
A former owner of Johnston Street Café and caterer, Betty Sims operates the Scrumptious Culinary School in Decatur and is a food consultant.
She has also received training at Peter Kumps Cooking School in New York, , Martha Stewart Seminars in West Port, Conn., Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, Calif., Cordon Bleu in Paris, Seminar with Kathy Alex in Grasse, France, and Seminar with Pam Sheldon Johns in Montepulciano, Italy.
Sister Schubert will also join Betty Sims in her cooking class on Thursday, Nov. 18.
Sister Schubert, who has been made famous by her popular rolls, often sets the pace at her bakeries in Luverne, Saraland, and Horse Cave, Ky., by making over 5 million rolls each day, baked in the revolving ovens at Sister Schubert’s Homemade Rolls.
Not so long ago, in 1989, Sister Schubert baked these famous rolls in the kitchen of her home in Troy, only for her family and friends.
In September of 2000, Sister sold the stock in her company to Lancaster Colony, a specialty foods corporation in Columbus, Ohio, whose broad marketing system has propelled Sister Schubert’s Rolls into normal brand status. Many people wonder where the name Sister Schubert’s comes from. When she was born, her older sister, Charlotte, couldn’t pronounce her given name, Patricia. “Her parents told her just to call me Sister, and I’ve been Sister to family and friends ever since,” she said.
General admission tickets are $16 and available at the door and in advance at the Princess Theatre box office.
