Athens police have arrested two more people on charges of soliciting prostitution.

Joseph H. Dewalt, 53, of 84 East 5th St., Peru, Ind. and Cedrick Jamar Turner, 25, of 18598 Wells Road, Athens, were arrested Thursday night.

Lt.-Det. Floyd Johnson said the two were arrested after they picked up an undercover female police officer who was working an area off U.S. 72 East in the vicinity of Interstate 65.

Athens police arrested 11 other men two weeks ago in an undercover prostitution sting. Johnson said the sting is the result of complaints from residents who suspected prostitution was a problem in many sections of Athens.

Capt. Marty Bruce said prostitutes working the streets of Athens are doing so to support their drug habits.

“We are continuing to work prostitution in Athens in an effort to slow this down,” Johnson said Friday.

When officers arrested Turner Thursday night, Johnson said they found he had two warrants for failure to appear in court against him for driving while license suspended.

Soliciting prostitution is a misdemeanor, he said.
