The Alabama Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program is introducing the WICShopper app for smartphones and other devices. This new app has taken the place of the former Alabama WIC app.

According to a press release from the Alabama Department of Public Health, the WICShopper app “makes it easy for Alabama WIC participants to keep track of their benefits in real-time, helping them stay updated on eligibility and monthly food package options.”

A key option of the new app is its ability to help users find out which food items can be purchased with their specific WIC benefits. The app can locate nearby WIC clinics and authorized grocery stores, view past purchases and browse a current list of authorized food products. Users can also explore healthy recipes and cooking advice to encourage nutritious eating habits, along with quick access to resources like breastfeeding support and nutrition education courses. The UPC barcode scanning feature lets users check if a product is approved as a WIC food item based on their individual benefits. Overall, the WICShopper app represents a significant advancement in helping Alabama families enrolled in the program access essential resources for healthier living.

“We’ve received amazing feedback since the launch of the WICShopper app. Users really appreciate the Scan Barcode feature. As we continue to introduce this app to all our participants across the state of Alabama, we’re thrilled that they’ll get to enjoy an even better shopping experience,” said Reba Brannan, MPH, RD, LD, Northeastern District WIC Nutrition Director.

According to ADPH, Alabama WIC serves more than 110,000 moms, babies and young children living throughout Alabama’s 67 counties. WIC participants can download the free app on their smartphones and other devices by visiting either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and searching for “WICShopper.”
