Athens won the Class 6A state wrestling title last week following a top-notch performance.
The Golden Eagles, coached by Andrew Campbell, finished with 146 points — clearing runner-up Pike Road (133) and Mountain Brook (128.5) comfortably.
Jaxon Unger (138 pounds), Will Anderson (144) and Austin Campbell (165) secured individual crowns in their respective divisions, while Lakin Poff (120) and Carter Campbell (150) earned second-place finishes. Bryce Schwan (175 — fifth place), Brice Emory (115 — sixth place), Cam Fielder (132), Zack Mitchell (157), Halston Barker (190), Braylon Young (215) and Pratt Johnsey (HWT) also contributed heavily for Athens both during the regular season and in the postseason, which included a runner-up finish at sectionals.
Anderson is now a five-time state champion.
“I don’t know if I could be any prouder of a team,” said Andrew Campbell, who took over the program in 2016. “This is a very special group that I have seen grow in wresting and in age over eight or nine years — I have been with these guys since youth wrestling.
“Winning the title with my son on the team is a huge and special moment for me as well, just because I know firsthand what we have been through together.”
Campbell also singled out a “supportive” administration as well as North Alabama Elite Wrestling, an organization he said is “a major contribution to our program.”
