The Athens Park & Rec, Athens City Council and Mayor Ronnie Marks recognize and congratulate the 2023 8U Girls Soccer Team for bringing home the State Championship.

The Athens City Council approved the following business items at its meeting Monday, Feb. 12, 2024.

Public hearings

• Public hearing relating to a proposed ordinance to rezone +/- 0.84 acres located directly north of Elm Street West and approximately 825’ west of Edgewood Road from EST (Estate residential and Agricultural District) to INST (Institutional District) within the corporate limits of the City of Athens. The ordinance was approved.

• Public hearing relating to a proposed ordinance to zone +/- 117.23 acres (The Healthcare Authority of the city of Huntsville) located directly west of US Hwy 31 South and approximately 850’ north of Huntsville Brownsferry Road, INST (institutional district), within the corporate limits of the City of Athens. The ordinance was approved.

• Public hearing relating to a proposed ordinance amending the City of Athens Zoning Ordinance (building materials). The ordinance was approved.

• Public hearing related to a proposed ordinance amending the City of Athens Zoning Ordinance (murals). The ordinance was approved.

• Approve travel/education expenses for personnel of the Sanitation Department.

• Approve travel/education expenses for personnel of the Water Services Department.

• Approve travel/education expenses for personnel of the Water Services Department.

• Approve travel/education expenses for personnel of the IT Department.

• Approve the purchase of a Cues Model MZ330 CCTV camera assembly for the Wastewater Collection Division of the Water Services Department.

• Accept the low bid from Five Stones Landscape, LLC for 2024 Substation Lawn Maintenance.

• Approve the purchase of a truck for the IT Department.

Regular meeting

• Resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement with ALDOT for the maintenance of an at grade railroad crossing improvement project at McClellan Street and CSX crossing.

• Resolution to modify an agreement with the State of Alabama; acting by and through ALDOT for the maintenance and operation of roadway lighting and a flashing school speed limit sign at the intersection of Alabama Hwy 251 and US Hwy 31.

• Resolution to accept the proposal of AMBL Studios to provide architectural services in connection with the construction of the proposed new facility for Athens Utilities’ customer service operations.

• Resolution to allocate FY2023 capital appropriations.

• Resolution to approve the purchase of two 2024 Ford Explorer XLT 200 A 2WD 2.3L vehicles, one for the Building Department and one for the Planning Department.

• Ordinance concerning floodplain development.

• Resolution to approve matching funds for the community care fund.

• Resolution to approve the bid award to SEMS, Inc. to partially dredge the west WWTP bio-solids lagoon.
