- The Athens Police Department is announcing its Athens Community Eagle Watch Program to help gather video footage.
Mike West, Limestone County coroner, confirmed reports with The News Courier that the suspect killed in the officer-involved shooting on Wednesday evening was 40-year-old Maurice White.
West did not go into detail about facts from the case, as it is still an ongoing investigation that has been passed over to the State Bureau of Investigations, but he did offer the extent of the suspect’s wounds.
“He had multiple gunshot wounds as well as Taser spikes,” West said.
According to a released statement from police chief Anthony Pressnell on Wednesday night, the Athens Police Department received a call about 5:30 p.m. that White had threatened the occupant of a home with a gun, discharging the weapon, and subsequently fleeing the area.
Athens police officers responded to the call and located the White, who remained armed, according to the statement.
Officers then tried to convince White, on multiple occasions, to give up the gun, but White refused and fled on foot away from the officers, according to the release.
The release stated that White then ran into a residential neighborhood on Songbird Drive where officers again tried to convince him to give up the gun. White then fired his weapon and fled between two homes.
Officers once again ordered White to drop the gun before an officer used a Taser on White. According to the statement, despite being hit with a Taser, White still pointed the gun at officers.
According to the released statement, White was then shot by Athens police officers around 7:20 p.m.
Officers gave emergency first aid but were unsuccessful and White died on the scene, according to the release.
The Athens Police Department has notified the State Bureau of Investigations and they will will oversee the rest of the investigation.
Also according to the released statement, no other suspects were involved in the case and there is no outstanding threat to the public.
Efforts by The News Courier were made to reach Chief Pressnell for further comments were unsuccessful.
