Elkmont hired Joel Schrenk last week to lead its football program into the future.
The school hosted a meet-and-greet for the veteran coach on Sunday to officially usher in the new era.
“I’m very excited,” Schrenk said. “Any time there’s a new challenge, you try and get ready for it. Limestone County is home for my wife. She’s followed me all over God’s green earth, so I told her next time that something came open we’d take a look at it — and the Lord provided us a door that we didn’t really knock on.”
Schrenk spent seven campaigns (2012-18) at Falkville, where he totaled a 49-27 record to go along with five playoff berths and two region titles. He later made pit stops at Hazel Green (2019-21) and Woodland (2022-23) and sports a career mark of 60-66 as a head coach.
He takes over an Elkmont program that went 4-6 in 2023 — the most wins since 2014 — and saw former head coach Chris Bunio resign midseason.
“We’ll be hard-nosed, tough, exciting, fun, disciplined,” said Schrenk of his program. “The three words I always think of are fast, physical and fierce. Most importantly, we’re going to behave, do the right thing and represent the team and our community well. Once you’re good at those things, you can get better at football. I believe those two go hand in hand.”
