APD hold annual awards banquet: Miranda Meadows named Officer of the Year

The Athens Police Department held its annual banquet Saturday, Jan. 13, to thank employees for their service and to recognize those who went above and beyond in 2023.

Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell honored the following individuals with awards.

• Officer of the Year- Miranda Meadows

• Supervisor of the Year- Kelly Fussell

• Field Training Officer of the Year- Bobby Hand

• Chief’s Award- Retired Chief Floyd Johnson

• Marksman Award- Michael Stainbrook

• Employee of the Year- Randy Vickers

Support Person of the Year- Chaplain Dan Hughes

Chief Pressnell also recognized Officers Miranda Meadows, Black Morse, and Melissa Meadows for their actions during a traffic stop that resulted in a pursuit and manhunt. Officer Miranda Meadows pulled over the suspect, who drew a weapon then fled. During the pursuit, the suspect fired at Meadows’ vehicle and into the air.

Officer Morse backed up Officer Miranda Meadows and several agencies joined the manhunt. Officer Melissa Meadows helped to track down the suspect’s location thus allowing the suspect to be detained. No one was injured.

Chief Pressnell commended all three officers for relying on training and reacting quickly during a dangerous situation.
