- Luke Davis will be signing an athletic scholarship to the University of North Alabama for men’s golf on Nov. 8.
Luke Davis, a senior at Athens Bible school, will participate in National Signing Day to accept a golf scholarship offered by the Athletics Department of the University of North Alabama.
“Luke’s journey to accepting a scholarship to the University of North Alabama’s D1 men’s golf program truly inspires us. Despite facing significant challenges, he has shown remarkable resilience and determination, and we could not be more proud,” Lance Davis said.
Davis will join UNA’s men’s golf program as a student-athlete in the fall of 2024. This accomplishment is especially meaningful following a potentially career-ending injury in 2020 when he was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis, a condition that affects spine stability. After a lengthy surgery in Denver, Co., he not only recovered but also made a triumphant return to golf, winning the Bob Jones Invitational Tournament at the Ledges with a score of 6 under par 66. He has gone on to win numerous high school tournaments. This push to a full recovery demonstrates his dedication and passion for the sport.
“I had rarely ever been sick, and had never had a broken bone,” Davis said.
But then a tragedy followed his physical recovery when he lost his friend, cousin-in-law and mentor, John Broam, in November 2022. John was not only a family member but also one of Luke’s closest friends and mentors. Luke honored John’s memory by carrying his golf clubs on an honor walk at UAB Hospital, where John had been taken as an organ donor. He continued to pay tribute to John by carrying his clubs at the celebration of life ceremony held at Canebrake Club.
“John was my first text when I had a good day or a bad one. No hurt can compare to losing him,” Davis said of Broam.
Despite facing yet another setback in the form of a torn labrum that forced him to miss the remainder of his basketball season, Luke’s faith and his determination to make John proud have kept him going.
“This journey by Luke has strengthened my faith and has been inspiring to my family as well as the members and staff at Canebrake Club. As I watched him walk through the unknowns of major surgery, he handled it well. As I watched him walk through the type of personal loss that no kid should have to walk through, he handled it well. and in both situations his behavior pointed people to Christ. God has blessed Luke with the ability to play golf and his effort and determination turned that into an opportunity to play Division 1 Golf. Everyone in my family and at Canebrake Club look forward to supporting this next step in his career,” Micky Wolfe, Canebrake Club Golf Pro said.
Luke credits his return to the sport he loves to his faith and John’s memory, saying, “I’m a Christian and want to honor God in all I do. and now, I also want to honor John. I want to play college golf for myself and for him. I want to be the person he dreamed I could be and to make him proud.”
Davis’s mother, April, says, “We believe Luke’s story is not just about golf but also about becoming the best version of oneself. His resilience, determination, and commitment inspires us.”
Signing day events for Luke can be attended on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at Athens Bible School and also on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 6.p.m. at Canebrake in Athens, Ala.
