RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Jurors convicted a north Alabama woman Wednesday of capital murder in the death of her 6-year-old son, killed in a house fire last year the day after she bought a life insurance policy for him.

Jurors returned the verdict against Christie Michelle Scott, 30, during their third day of deliberations. She could receive life imprisonment or the death penalty at a sentencing hearing set for Thursday.

Prosecutors argued that Scott started the fire that killed her son, Mason Scott, so she could collect life insurance from the boy’s death. Evidence showed the woman purchased a $100,000 policy the afternoon before the fire.

Scott testified that she was innocent and had no idea how the fire began.

Scott and her then-4-year-old son Noah escaped the burning home through a window in her bedroom. Noah Scott slept in his mother’s bedroom the night of the fire.

Scott testified that after awakening to discover the blaze, she was unable to rescue Mason because of thick smoke and intense heat.

Prosecutors contend she did little to save her son and left him alone in the burning house. Mason Scott’s burned body was found on the floor of his bedroom.

Franklin District Attorney Joey Rushing told jurors during closing arguments to disregard the fact there were no witnesses to testify that Scott started the fire.

“There’s never eyewitnesses to a premeditated, well-planned murder,” Rushing said. “The circumstantial evidence shows Mrs. Scott did this.”

Defense attorney Robert Tuten argued that Scott bought $175,000 in life insurance policies on the boy within three months of his death as a way to properly insure her family. Scott was an agent for Alfa Insurance at the time of the fire.

Jurors rejected the testimony of defense witnesses who said the fire was an accident.

The case was the longest-running criminal trial in Franklin County history, with 15 days of testimony.
