A large upcoming project for the City of Athens now has some funds to get the ball rolling on the construction process.
The City Council voted to roll any remaining funds from the fiscal year 2018, 2019 and 2020 appropriations budgets into what is being called the Pryor Park project.
Mayor Ronnie Marks said he decided to begin using that name as a catch-all for the projects involving the area formerly inhabited by Pilgrim’s Pride.
“I have heard that area called chicken park, pride park, pryor park — I’ve heard people calling it everything in the world,” he said. “I decided to start calling it Pryor Park, because that area is on Pryor Street, until we have naming rights to call it something different.”
All told, the Council said $311,808 were moved into the Pryor Park project budget. Marks said those funds will help with the initial site work being done to the area.
The Council approved a resolution to authorize P.R. Matthewson & Associates Engineers, Inc. to perform bridge inspections at Pryor Park as part of that site work.
“We can’t do any other work until the site work is completed,” Marks said.
Marks said the master plan for Pryor Park is still “fluid,” but as of now the city has “10 huge slides” full of proposed layout and design for the area.
He said the amenities listed in the plans include a playground, splash pad, dog park, amphitheater and other items. What ends up becoming part of the finished product will depend on obtaining funding like grants, Marks said.
