An Ardmore man was arrested Monday in connection with the theft of three historical markers, an official said.

Limestone County Sheriff’s Office deputy and spokesman Stephen Young said Weston Scott Fitzgerald, 40, was charged with three counts of first-degree theft. He was still being held late Monday in the Limestone County Jail with bail set at $15,000.

The Sheriff’s Office was contacted April 22 by the Limestone County Historical Society regarding the theft of two markers stolen in the northwest part of the county. On June 7, the society reported a third marker missing from in front of the Gamble House on Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road.

Young said after investigators received information about the location of the markers, Fitzgerald was identified as a suspect. The markers were subsequently recovered Saturday from a storage unit.

After investigators interviewed witnesses, theft warrants were obtained for Fitzgerald.

Young said the investigation remains open and additional charges may be pending.
