Five Limestone County men have been formally charged by a Limestone County grand jury on separate felony charges involving child abuse or child pornography, records show.
They are among 133 people recently indicted.
Bobby Joe Adams, 50, of 8886 Franklin Road, Limestone County, was indicted on a charge of enticing a child for allegedly trying to give the 13-year-old girl marijuana in exchange for sex, records show. Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely said in February, when Adams was first arrested, that Adams admitted trying to make the exchange.
Marcos Leon Martinez, 23, of 15617 Ham Road, Athens, was indicted on a charge of child abuse for allegedly breaking the leg of his 5-month-old son, records show. The child was taken to a doctor with pain and swelling in the leg and was referred to a specialist in Huntsville, who determined the injury was not accidental, Limestone County Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt said at the time Martinez was first arrested on June 12. Investigator Leslie Ramsey investigated the case and made the charges.
James Seay Thorne, 39, of 716 Swan Drive, Athens, was indicted on a charge child abuse for allegedly whipping his girlfriend’s 4-year-old boy so severely with a belt that it left marks on his body, records show. Athens Police Lt. Floyd Johnson said at the time Thorne was first arrested March 18 that the alleged abuse occurred the night before the arrest but had also occurred multiple times previously. “He used a belt on him and caused multiple injuries … It was a bad situation,” Johnson said. Someone saw the child and reported the alleged abuse to police.
Richard Martin Strong, 27, of 21559 New Garden Road, Elkmont, was indicted on a charge of chemical endangerment of a child for allegedly exposing his 2-year-old daughter to methamphetamine, records show. Limestone County Investigator Ramsey learned the girl tested positive for methamphetamine after visiting her father’s home and after the father also tested positive for the drug, McNatt said. Both Strong and the mother, who are divorced and living separately, were tested for drugs. The mother tested negative, so Ramsey sought the warrant.
Douglas Oneal Butler, 45, of 5806 Carla Drive, Athens, was indicted on a charge of possession of pornographic material for allegedly having images of children engaging in sexual acts, records show. McNatt said at the time Butler was arrested Aug. 14 that the department received a report that he had images on a business computer of children engaged in sexual acts. Investigator Jay Looney examined the evidence and obtained a warrant. McNatt declined to name the business for whom the accused worked.
