An Athens teen has been indicted by the Limestone County grand jury on two assault charges related to a March shooting, records show.

Sixteen-year-old Ky’Ruan Jameir Yarbrough was initially charged with one count of first-degree assault after firing a weapon around 7 p.m. March 30 at a group of juveniles in the 15000 block of Brownsferry Road in Athens. According to a statement from the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, bullets struck one male in the stomach and leg, struck another male in the leg and grazed the shirt of a female.

Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones said the shooting occurred after an altercation between Yarbrough and some of the juveniles. LCSO investigators determined Yarbrough had been bullying them earlier, one stood up to him, and after a physical altercation, Yarbrough left to get a handgun.

He drove back to the residence on Brownsferry Road, fired at the victims and left again. He was arrested April 1, records show.

On June 16, the grand jury indicted Yarbrough on the original count of first-degree assault and an additional count of second-degree assault. Jones said the difference in charges was related to the difference in severity of injuries.

The victim who was struck twice was transported to Athens-Limestone Hospital in a personal vehicle, then to Huntsville Hospital by ambulance for surgery, according to LCSO. He is listed as the victim of the first-degree assault.

The second-degree assault victim and the female did not seek medical treatment. They chose to remain at the scene and were still there when LCSO deputies and investigators arrived. Jones said the assault victims are each 17 years old.

Yarbrough was arrested on the indictment warrant June 26 but has since been released from the Limestone County Jail on a $30,000 bond.
