Alabama’s unemployment rate is up slightly despite what officials are calling record employment in the state.
The preliminary, seasonally adjusted state jobless rate for April is 3.8%. That’s up one-tenth of a percent from March, but it’s still below the 4.1% rate from a year before.

Limestone County’s jobless rate in April was 3 percent, down from 3.4 percent in March. That represents 1,296 unemployed people for the month of April.
The statewide jobless rate for April represents 83,565 unemployed people, but a news release from the Labor Department says for the fourth straight month the state still has more people working than ever before. More than 2.1 million people had jobs last month.
“Employment has once again reached record levels,” said Secretary of Labor Fitzgerald Washington. “Our economy is supporting more jobs than ever before and more people are in the labor force than ever before. Those that are entering the labor force are finding work. The jobs are out there, and we’re working harder than even before to make sure that everyone who wants a job, has one.”
Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are: Shelby County at 2.4%, Marshall County at 2.8%, and Tuscaloosa, Morgan, Madison, Lee, Elmore and Blount counties all at 2.9%. Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Wilcox County at 7.0%, Greene and Lowndes counties at 6.5%, and Clarke County at 6.0%.
