Elk River Boys claim top prize at annual wild game cook-off

Despite a number of teams and delectable dishes, it was the Elk River Boys who earned top honors at the 11th annual Wild Game Cook-Off, presented by the Alabama Wildlife Federation.

The event was held Tuesday at Canebrake Club in Athens. The judges selected the Elk River Boys for their Mike’s Muley dish. Other entries included bass filet, honey-bourbon glazed duck and deer pops.

The event, which was sponsored by Kimber Manufacturing, raises funds and awareness for the conservation of wildlife and natural resources.

The Elk River Boys team, which won Best Overall, is comprised of Mike Conlon, Steve Kirkpatrick, Zach Conlon and Kristy Conlon. The team will be invited to the state finals held Aug. 10 at Lanark in Millbrook to compete for the title of AWF 2019 Wild Game Cook-Off State Champion.

Best Presentation went to Flew The Coop, while the Cast Products won Best Presentation Runner-Up. Representatives from the Alabama Army National Guard were on hand to present the People’s Choice award to Cast Products.

Other local winners included:

Fish Division

• First: Killin’ Time, consisting of George Downs, Tommy Downs, Mike Royster and Heath Davis, cooking Crappie Puppies;

• Second: Flew The Coop, consisting of Amanda Havely, Wes Henry, Jay Romaine and Jamie Smith, cooking River Boyz Flathead Cakes; and

• Third: Red Hen, consisting of Dan Nelson, Gwen Nelson, Matt Nelson and Jen Nelson cooking Fresh Caught Bass Fillet.

Fowl Division

• First: Red Hen w Gourmet Quail Poppers;

• Second: Flew The Coop cooking BBQ Turkey Salad Lettuce Wraps; and

• Third: LeA Song Of Fowl & Stag, consisting of Clint Mason, Dan Waldrop, Jacob Ricketts and Tyler Stephens, cooking Honey Bourbon Glazed Duck.

Game Division

• First: Elk River Boys cooking Mike’s Muley;

• Second: Athens Fire, consisting of Lee Marker, Brett Mansfield, Martin Ezell and Jacob Young, cooking Segundo Conquistador’s Delight; and

• Third: Killin’ Time cooking Coffee Deer Pops.

Potluck Division

• First: Hunt Brothers, consisting of DeWitt Burns, Buck Wilson, David Hunt and Robert Valls, cooking Gobbler Gumbo; and

• Second: Thunder Chickens, consisting of Tyler Dorning, William Ming and Keith Chronister, cooking Deer Jambalaya.
