The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives will be closed on Monday, Feb. 18 in observance of Presidents Day.

Chicken stew

The American Legion is having its monthly chicken stew luncheon from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19. Price is $7 for eat-ins (all you can eat), or $7 per quart for carry outs. Eat-ins include stew, drinks and desserts. Desserts for carry outs (two per quart purchased with four dessert maximum) are an additional $1 each. Containers are provided for carry outs. Free delivery in Athens city limits is available for businesses or people who are home bound. Used book sale

African-American Read-in

The American Association of University Women and Athens State University will host the 30th National African-American Read-in at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the Athens State University library. The public is invited to read a three-to-four-minute work penned by an African-American female author. Refreshments will be served. Athens State Black History Month

Athens State University will host two events Tuesday, Feb. 26, in honor of Black History Month. An art exhibit will open in the university’s library from 4:30-5:45 p.m. The exhibit will detail the African-American experience in north Alabama from Civil War through present day. The second event is a screening of the film “Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequality” from 6-8 p.m. at McCandless Hall. A forum discussion will follow. Both events are free. Balancing classes

The Limestone County Council on Aging will host “A Matter of Balance,” weekly balancing classes for older adults at greater risk of falling. The classes will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, March 18, and take place weekly through May 6 at the Athens Senior Center. The classes aim to increase physical activity and reduce the fear of falling. Athens leaf collection

The final round of Athens leaf collection runs through March 1, weather permitting. If your garbage pickup is Tuesday, your leaf collection is Feb. 4-8; if garbage pickup is Wednesday, leaf collection is Feb. 11-15; if garbage pickup is Thursday, leaf collection is Feb. 18-22; if garbage pickup is Friday, leaf collection is Feb. 25-March 1. Leaves mixed with limbs won’t be collected. Do not block traffic lanes with leaves.

Athens State alumni awards

Athens State University Alumni Association is accepting nominations for alumni awards, including Distinguished Alumni, Outstanding Alumni Achievement, Alumni Loyalty, and more. Combined campaign deadline

March 8 is the deadline for local voluntary charitable health and human care agencies or federations to apply for participation in the fall 2019 state combined campaign. The campaign is designed to allow state employees to give to recognized local and/or statewide charities. Tax prep

RSVP offers free income tax assistance for low-income, disabled or elderly taxpayers Feb. 2-April 15. Those who need assistance can visit the First United Methodist Church Youth Center from 9 a.m.– 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays in February and Mondays and Thursdays in March and April. The center is at 203 N. Jefferson St., Athens. Tax service will also by provided at the Ardmore Public Library by appointment only on Wednesdays from Feb. 6-April 10. Paid subs needed

Community Action Partnership of North Alabama is recruiting substitutes in Limestone and Madison counties. Requirements: Must be age 19 or older, hold high school diploma or GED, have medical form and tuberculosis test completed within past six months. Nonperishable food drive

Lil Red Wagon Collections at 208 N. Houston St., Athens, is open 9 a.m.–7 p.m. the first week of each month to collect nonperishable food donations for local homeless people. Donated items will be given to Limestone County Churches Involved, which will distribute them.

Spaghetti dinner

The Vietnam Veterans of America will host a spaghetti dinner the third Monday of every month through October. Dinner consists of spaghetti, cole slaw or salad, garlic bread, dessert and drink. People can either eat in or carry out. The cost of a plate is $8. Dinners will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at the VVA building, located at 17915 W. Elm St., Athens.
