Athens took advantage of three first-half turnovers by Hazel Green to take a 30-0 halftime lead en route to a 37-3 victory over the Trojans.
Athens quarterback and Nebraska commit Logan Smothers was the Golden Eagles’ offensive catylist, running for two touchdowns and throwing for another.
Athens got on the board early when Smothers scored on a 4-yard run with 2:52 left in the first quarter. Moments later, Smothers tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Rinke.
Athens put the game away in the second quarter with three more scores. Cesar Sanchez hit a 30-yard field goal before Smothers scored again on a 30-yard scoring run.
Smothers then threw a 15-yard touchdown pass late in the quarter to put Athens up by 30 points and basically salt the game away early.
After a scoreless third quarter, Athens put its final touchdown on the board early in the fourth, when Jakolby Boykin scampered in the end zone from four yards out.
Hazel Green spoiled the Athens shutout bid with less than a minute remaining in the game by connecting on a 30-yard field goal.
The Golden Eagles (3-1) will return home next Friday to host rival East Limestone.
