In other business Monday, the council approved the purchase of a 2015 Schwarze A7 Tornado Street Sweeper for the Street Department at a cost of $109,800. Until now, the city has been leasing the sweeper.
Public Works Director James Rich said the sweeper will be used within the corporate limits of Athens — Lucas Ferry Road to the west, Elkton Road to the north, Moyers Road to the south and Mooresville Road to the east.
He added there would likely be one Public Works Department employee assigned to the machine. He told the council if there was dedicated personnel, the streets could be swept on a monthly basis.
