Athens Police Department found evidence of multiple burglaries at local auto dealerships Sunday morning, Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said Monday.
Around 3:20 a.m. Sunday, Officer Casey Terry found a Honda Accord with front-end damage, doors open and engine running next to the back door of Jimmy Smith Buick and GMC on U.S. 72 East, Johnson said. Terry called for another unit and began checking the area. He discovered the back roll-up door to the shop area was open and a window into the business was broken.
“When the owners arrived at the business, they identified two vehicles had been stolen from the shop area,” the chief said. “Officers also learned the Honda had been stolen from Jerry Damson’s in Huntsville.”
The vehicles from Jimmy Smith Buick and GMC were recovered later Sunday morning in Huntsville, Johnson said.
After the first burglary was discovered, Officer Jason Mullins found evidence of a break-in at Champion Chevrolet on South Clinton Street in Athens. Johnson said a window was broken and a lock box was damaged.
No arrests had been made in the case as of The News Courier’s press deadline.
