A woman accused of forging Hospice of Limestone County checks and cashing them at a Decatur bank was arrested over the weekend and charged in connection with the case.
According to a press release from the Decatur Police Department, 21-year-old Brittany Maria Lang of Saraland was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and one charge of first-degree theft.

Hospice of Limestone County filed a report last month with the Decatur Police Department in reference to a forgery. Suzanne Paysinger, director of Hospice, said the crime was first uncovered during reconciliation of the books.
“The office manager saw two checks with the same check number,” she said. “We reconcile pretty often, and that’s when we started to investigate.”
She explained the forged checks don’t look exactly like Hospice of Limestone County checks. She said no more than three forged checks were cashed at the Decatur branch of Bank Independent and added they were all cashed the same day.
“We immediately called the bank, and they’ve been working with us to monitor our account,” Paysinger said.
The release from the Decatur Police Department said Lang was developed as a suspect in the case during the course of the investigation. Paysinger said Lang is not a Hospice employee, though it’s possible she could have worked for one of the agency’s vendors.
Two warrants were obtained June 18 for Lang’s arrest. She was located by the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office on Friday and was extradited to Decatur, where she was subsequently charged in the case.
