Nick Townsend pitched a no-hitter as West Limestone defeated Priceville 3-0 Thursday to wrap up a Class 4A, Area 15 championship.
Townsend was dominant on the mound, striking out 11 batters and walking just three. Of the 85 pitches he threw in the game, 56 of them were strikes.
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when Braden Tuten hit a two-run double to give West Limestone the lead. The Wildcats added another run in the top of the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Levi McCormick.
Tuten, Drew Beddingfield and Gage McKelvey all finished the game with two hits, with Tuten and McKelvey hitting doubles.
West Limestone fell to Priceville 3-2 in the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader, but that game did not count in the area standings because the Wildcats had won the first two games of the series. The third game only counts if the teams split their first two games. Tuten led West Limestone with three hits and two RBIs in the second game.
The Wildcats finished area play with a 4-0 record, and will host a first-round playoff series later this month.
Elkmont 7-3, West Morgan 4-16
Elkmont split a doubleheader with West Morgan Tuesday, winning the first game 7-4 before falling in the nightcap 16-3.
Elkmont scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to take control of the first game en route to the victory. The big hit of the inning was a grand slam by Clay Hunt. Cameryn Peden had an RBI double and Brett Parker drove in a run with a single in the inning as well.
Braden Miller pitched a strong game for the Red Devils, allowing two earned runs on five hits in six innings. Hunt pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the save.
Preston Robinson and Hunter Pitman each had two hits for Elkmont in the second game, while Jayden Adams had a hit and an RBI for the Red Devils.
Hazel Green 2, Athens 1
A great pitching performance from Jacob McNairy wasn’t quite enough for Athens, as the Golden Eagles fell to Hazel Green on a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The game was a pitcher’s duel from the beginning, as each team had just six hits in the game. Athens scored its run in the top of the second inning on a Bryson Kirk RBI single, but Hazel Green tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. That’s how the score remained until the Trojans won it in the eighth.
Kirk had two hits and the only RBI for the Golden Eagles. McNairy struck out six batters and allowed one earned run while pitching the complete game.
Clements 4-8, East Lawrence 9-5
Clements and East Lawrence split a Thursday doubleheader, with East Lawrence taking the first game 9-4 and Clements winning the second game 8-5.
Clements overcame a 5-0 deficit in the second game by scoring five runs in the bottom of the third inning and three more in the fifth.
Eli Gilbert led the way with four hits, including a double, and two RBIs, while Lucas Bailey had three hits and drove in two runs. Ryland Kirk also had two hits and two RBIs, and Dorian McCullough, Seth Harbin and Isaac Evans also had two hits each.
Cole Wales, Harbin, Evans and Bailey all had two hits each in the first game of the doubleheader.
East Limestone 9-2, Lawrence County 7-15
East Limestone and Lawrence County split a doubleheader Thursday, with the Indians taking the first game 9-7 and Lawrence County winning the second game 15-2.
East Limestone trailed 6-2 in the first game, but scored three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take the victory.
Tyler Wagnon and Payton Jackson both had three hits and an RBI, while Hayden Carter had two hits and two RBIs. Clayton Stevens and Carlton Schmeider also had two hits for the Indians.
A 12-run fourth inning was the difference in the second game, as Lawrence County cruised to the win. Wagnon had two hits for the Indians in the game.
