On Dec. 20, 2017, Limestone County Sheriff’s Lt. Johnny Morell was investigating a case about an accidental shooting, according to a report filed in Limestone County District Court. He talked with Campbell at his home and noticed several large boxes of fireworks in one of the bedrooms. Morell passed the information to Lt. Jay Stinnett and Investigator Chad Harbin, and the two paid a visit to Campbell’s home to see if the fireworks were still there.

Stinnett knew a fireworks stand on Harvest Road had twice been broken into in August 2017. Campbell was not home when the officers arrived so they left and returned 20 minutes later.

While driving by, they saw the front door of Campbell’s mobile home ajar. After pulling into the driveway, the officers saw a man walking out of the home with a big box of fireworks.

The man said Campbell had told him to come to the home, pick up and wrap a box of fireworks because he was giving it to someone as a Christmas gift. The man said there were more boxes of fireworks in the mobile home.

After looking into a bedroom window, the officers saw several mores boxes of fireworks inside. The man retrieved them and brought them to the officers. He also gave the officers a recorded statement about the boxes. The fireworks were identified by the fireworks stand owner as those that had been stolen from his stand.
