One person was killed Sunday evening in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 72 near Stanley Street, an official said.

Athens Police Capt. Trevor Harris said a vehicle was traveling east on 72 when it drifted off the road and rolled several times before coming to rest in the parking lot of the former Collins Supply store. Harris said witnesses indicated no other vehicles were involved.

The driver, a male, was ejected. The driver was the only person in the vehicle.

Harris said paramedics quickly transported the driver to Athens-Limestone Hospital, where he later died. The driver’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
